Why these signals, not just the star rating
A star rating alone is easy to game and slow to change. A groomer with 4.8 stars from 6 reviews two years ago tells you very little about what booking there today would be like. That is why rating carries 30% rather than the full weight.
Sentiment (28%) catches what stars miss. A place can sit at 4.2 stars while recent reviewers consistently mention a stressed cat or a botched trim. Our AI reads those themes and scores them separately from the number itself.
Volume (18%) is log-scaled deliberately. The difference between 5 reviews and 50 reviews is significant. The difference between 300 and 500 is much less so. Scaling this way stops a business with one glowing review from outranking one with a long, steady track record.
Recency (14%) matters because groomers change hands, change staff, and change quality. A business that was excellent in 2021 but has had no reviews since deserves a lower confidence score than one with recent activity.
Completeness (10%) is a proxy for professionalism and practicality. If a business has not listed its phone number or hours, you cannot easily book with them, and that is a real inconvenience worth reflecting in the score.
Honest limits
Businesses with few recent reviews receive a low-confidence label on their listing. Their score is mathematically valid but based on thin data, so treat it with more caution than a score built on dozens of recent reviews.
